Shanghai lands core eSports development area in Pudong District

By Andrea Huang 09 Aug 2018

The Shanghai government landed the “Shanghai Esports Industry Development Core Functions Area” in Pudong District with the announcement taking place on August 4 during the 2018 Global E-sports Conference in Shanghai.

After landing this core functions area, Pudong will support its development through benefits and advantages of the China Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone in Pudong and through a series of other available resources and services.

Awarding this area to Pudong District is regarded as one of a series of important follow-up steps to improve the Shanghai eSports industry ecosystem, after Shanghai clearly set out the goal of building itself towards a global eSports capital last year as one of the directions to develop its own culture industry and entrepreneurship sector.

Pudong will develop towards an integrated platform of eSports, combining industry capitals, eSports companies and eSports competitions and conferences/exhibitions. It will cover the development of eSports talent growth, provide professional services for the eSports industry and offer a good policy environment.

Many Chinese eSports companies, eSports clubs and events are already based in Shanghai. From a nationwide perspective and compared with other Chinese cities that also position themselves as eSports cities, Shanghai wants to distinguish itself by making itself a global eSports city.
