Southern Chinese city releases its policy to develop campus football

By Zhang Tingting 16 Sep 2015

The local government of Kunming, the capital city of Chinese southern Province Yunnan Province, has published its policy on the development of campus football in the city.

The policy revealed plans for regulating football modules as mandatory in primary schools, middle schools and high schools curriculums. By 2020, it is expected that there will be one football class each week in primary schools and middle schools, and one non-mandatory football class every other week in high schools with no less than 20 classes each year in total. Football will also be a subject in tests in middle schools.

In addition, international football coaches will be employed in participating schools within the counties. Football players with potential may also be enrolled in specialized football schools.

From 2016, the city government’s finance department will reserve RMB20 million each year for campus football and will publish regulations and be held accountable to ensure proper and safe usage of the fund. Regarding schools, on-campus football development costs should be paid by the school’s public fund while football-specific schools can only receive no less than 8% of their public funds with non-football-specific schools obtaining no less than 5%.
