CSL to reduce number of foreign players

By Chen Yaping 21 Jun 2016

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) is planning to make a policy adjustment within the Chinese Super League (CSL), according to reports from a recent meeting in Guizhou Province.

As stated in several reports, the CFA will reduce the number of foreign players a club can register, in time for the 2018 season. A tentative plan is to be launched for next season to allow clubs to adjust their squads before changing the 4+1 foreign player quota to 3+1.

At present, the CSL can register 4 foreign players in their squad as well as 1 foreigner from another AFC member country. “During matches, CSL teams can field three foreigners at any one time, plus a fourth player from an Asian Confederation country,” as stated in a Wildeastfootballreport, “The fifth foreigner in the squad can sit on the bench but can only replace another foreign player.”

The CSL foreign player quota has made several adjustments over the years, with the current 4+1 rule in place since 2009.
