According to an article published on the China National Tourism Administration website, the China National Tourism Administration and the General Administration of Sport of China have released the first 30 national sports tourism demonstration bases and 33 national sports tourism events.
Based on voluntary application and recommendation by the tourism authorities and the sports bureaus in the different provinces and cities, the list was reviewed and analyzed by experts gathered by the China National Tourism Administration and the General Administration of Sport of China, it was then approved by the leaders of the two institutions.

The China National Tourism Administration and the General Administration of Sport of China clearly put the development of sport tourism forward in their guide. The target released in December 2016 for the year 2020 was: establishing 100 sports tour destinations with significant influence, building 100 national sports tourism demonstration bases, launching 100 sports tourism events, creating 100 sports tourism routes, promoting 100 sports tourism enterprises or well-known brands with a good reputation and a strong influence. The number of sports tourists reaches one billion and accounts for 15% of the total tourists and the total consumption of sports tourism reaches over one trillion yuan.
