Beijing to bid for 2019 FIBA World Cup

By Yutang Sports 05 Feb 2015

Beijing Youth Daily reported today that Beijing will lead a bid for 2019 FIBA World Cup. This news came from Mr. Chen Jie, the associate head of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports.

According to Chen, Beijing actually bid for the 2014 FIBA World Cup, but didn’t succeed. The 2014 World Cup was the inaugural event for FIBA World Cup, for which China didn’t qualify and also gave up the wildcard opportunity.

This time Beijing will bid again to hold the second FIBA World Cup in 2019. It will lead the bid. Eight other cities will assist the event holding then, including Shenzhen, Dongguan, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Chengdu.

FIBA is reported to be coming to China in March to inspect physical facilities such as venues and other equipment. The result of the host country will be out around June 16 and June 18.

Other bidding countries include Germany and Philippine.

Chen said that if China played in the event as the host country, it would be very meaningful.
