The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) officially set up a youth basketball committee at a meeting held Thursday in Chengdu City of Sichuan Province.
Song Xiaobo, a Chinese basketball legend and the former captain of China’s national women’s basketball team, has been elected as the director of the committee.
According to media reports, the CBA will promote the combination of sports and education over the next four years. At the same time, a youth basketball competition ecosystem will be established, highlighting the importance of education, sports and social community,
The CBA will bring new ideas to the current model of youth basketball tournaments, along with fostering basketball talents by leveraging the National Games and the National Youth Games.
China’s national basketball governing body is also looking to set up nine other special committees for the country’s basketball reform.
As the CBA Chairman Yao Ming said, “Reform is not turning A to B, but combining A with B. More to the point, we expect to promote the sustainable development of basketball in China, through taking full use of different resources. That’s also one of the reasons why we have established the youth committee.”
