Wanda Sports, the sports unit of China’s commercial giant Wanda Group, is reportedly preparing to initiate a China Cup among four international soccer teams including China. The competition will be held in the South West Chinese city of Chengdu next January, according to Chinese newspaper Titan24.
As reported, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) has approved Wanda Sports’ approach to plan and organise a soccer tournament involving Team China.
The newspaper also said Wanda is intent on turning this potential competition into an annual event.
Apart from China, the remaining participants of the 2017 China Cup have yet to be decided. However, as suggested, Wanda Sports will pull out all the stops to try and bring three high-profile international teams to China in order to increase the status of the event.
Wanda Sports, headquartered in Guangzhou, is the integration of Infront Sports & Media and the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), which Wanda Group previously acquired for $1.17bn and $650mn respectively.
