Wellington Phoenix to play friendly in Beijing

By Chen Yaping 30 May 2016

Wellington Phoenix, the Austrilian A-League club, will meet second-tier Beijing BG in Beijing’s Olympic Sports Stadium on July 27.

This match is aimed to mark the 10th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Beijing and Wellington. It's expected that the fixture will become an annual event, which will be known as the Capital Cup.

At the same time, this trip will also include some business and civic activities. Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown will be part of the Phoenix's entourage.

"Beijing is a very important sister city to Wellington on a number of fronts – culturally, commercially and now in sport. This visibility will help attract more international students to the capital," said the Wellington mayor.

Phoenix General Manager David Dome said the Phoenix was committed to the business of football. As he said, “China is an increasingly important part of the world for commerce and for football. In consultation with the city council, we will be taking a delegation with us for football and business purposes.”
