Sydney FC CEO hopes to enhance cooperation with China

By Nong Ruowen 04 May 2017

Recently the Xinhua Agency did an email interview with Tony Pignata, CEO of Sydney FC on 2nd May. In the interview Mr. Pignata expressed Sydney FC’s intention to collaborate with Chinese investors in the future.

On 29th April, Sydney FC reached the Hyundai A-League Grand Final, which also means that they will join the AFC Champions League next year.

Meanwhile, in Mr. Pignata’s opinion, the Chinese Super League has achieved significant developments in both the scale and quality of its games. Chinese football clubs, such as Guangzhou Evergrande and Shanghai Shenhua, are among the best in Asia. Furthermore, the fan bases of Chinese football clubs are enormous and have great influence.

“I still remember that when Guangzhou Evergrande came to the home of Sydney FC for a game, about 10,000 Chinese fans came here to cheer them on. That is really incredible,” said Mr. Pignata. ” Although our funding is a lot less than some Chinese giants, we are capable of competing with other Asian clubs.”

As a result, Sydney FC is seeking to attract more Chinese fans and opportunities to partner with Chinese investors and football clubs. To achieve this goal, Sydney FC has created an official account on Wechat, a popular social App in China, as well as enhancing their influence in Chinese communities in Australia by cooperating with the University of New South Wales.
